GYROSCOPIC DEVICE FOR SHIP HEADING CONTROL
The authors state that rudders and Kort nozzles have several drawbacks as ship heading control equipment. Chief among these are: poor controllability at slow speeds, at zero speed or in reverse; high power plant power consumption when moving with reset rudders (Kort nozzles); and frequent rudder and Kort nozzle breakages when navigating clogged or shallow channels, or in ice. They explain how these drawbacks are eliminated by the use of gyroscopic devices to control ship heading.
