ANSI CONTAINER STANDARDS

The American National Standards Institute's MH5 committee has published three new cargo container standards, a basic set of standards and two specialized standards that must be used in conjunction with the basic set. The first, MH5.1, covers the basic requirements for containers to facilitate handling and securing necessary for transport by, and interchange between, carrier equipment of two or more modes of transport. The second, MH5.1.1, establishes requirements unique to closed van-type, dry cargo containers. Both sets of requirements must be met to obtain a standard closed container. The third standard, MH5.1.3, covers requirements unique to tank containers for liquids and gases. It, too, must be used together with the MH5.1 basic requirements in order to have a standard tank container for liquids and gases.
