SUBDIVISION RULES INFLUENCE FUTURE RORO DESIGNS
Companies that are considering contracting for newbuildings need to be aware of the latest legislation of the International Maritime Organization regarding the subdivision of watertight compartments on dry cargo ships, including ro/ro ships. The requirements that will emerge are essentially defined and will have a major import on the design of tonnage. This article is devoted to explaining the new rules, and how they are based on probabilistic concepts. This approach represents a major change from existing deterministic methods for the assessment of damage stability. The topics of vertical damage, stability information and external openings are included in the scope of the discussion.
