CAN SIMULATORS BE USED TO IDENTIFY AND SPECIFY TRAINING NEEDS?
The simulator type plays a key role in the application of the simulator for training purposes. When defining training needs, traditional sources for composing a curriculum can be amended by using simulators for quicker feedback. Discrepancies between the simulated and real worlds, however, must be considered. Adaptation to unrealistic conditions results in negative training effects. An advantage of simulation is that it allows the observation of performance under defined conditions. Some examples of experiences with SUSAN, the Hamburg shiphandling simulator, are given. The paper ends with some recommedations regarding simulators, instructors and exercises, and with encouragement to contribute to defining accepted standards of professional shiphandling.
