THE ROLE OF A REGIONAL MARITIME ACADEMY IN DEVELOPING COMMON REGIONAL TRAINING STANDARDS AND CONTRIBUTING TO THE ENHANCEMENT OF INTERNATIONAL TRAINING STANDARDS FOR SHIPBOARD PERSONNEL
The author describes the centralized training facility that serves all the Arab states, the Arab Maritime Transport Academy. In view of the decrease in nautical colleges in the developed countries, and because some colleges in developing areas are expected to act as regional centers for a number of countries, he sees an urgent need for greater international cooperation between nautical training institutions so that they may benefit from mutual support and share their experiences. This concept of regionalization and regional academies is discussed in some depth, including the matters of facility requirements, examination system and networking.
