SERVICE EXPERIENCE WITH PROTECTIVE COATINGS IN INDUSTRIAL, MARINE AND AERO GAS TURBINE
Coating selection for turbine rotor blade application is discussed and service performance relative to anticipated results based on laboratory testing is evaluated. Aluminide coatings continue to provide good protection on many turbine blades and represent one cost effective solution. In cases of extreme temperature, corrosion and mechanical environments, the author states that aluminide coatings are inadequate and improved coatings are required. Further study of surface debris promoted spallation is needed. The full potential of thermal barrier coating systems has not yet been realized.
