IMPLEMENTATION OF AUTOMATIC CHART UPDATING
The computer of the Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) Hydrographic/Topographic Center in Washington, D.C., generates the Weekly Notice to Mariners publication that all deep-draft, oceangoing vessels require to keep their nautical charts updated with the latest corrections. Lykes Bros. Steamship Co., which operates 29 U.S.-flag vessels, maintains a chart information management system in which an office microcomputer automatically connects to the DMA computer each week to download an electronic version of the Notice to Mariners. The system, whose development and implementation this paper describes, makes chart correction information available to the fleet about two weeks in advance of the publication of the paper version. The system may have applicability for other companies that are subject to Coast Guard requirements regarding nautical chart corrections.
