THE CONTROL OF RIGHT-TURNING VEHICLES AT SIGNAL-CONTROLLED INTERSECTIONS: TWO OPPOSING VIEWS. A COMMENT ON A SUGGESTION BY AL-SALMAN AND SALTER
Al-Salman and Salter have proposed an ingenious new method for the control of right-turning traffic at a controlled intersection. The effect of this is to ensure that this traffic effectively makes its right turn at a time and place where it is not obstructed by traffic proceeding in the opposite direction along the same road. The authors' results, which were based on computer simulations, claimed great time savings with this arrangement over conventional layouts. In this paper, this idea is further investigated by using a delay minimising program to determine optimal signal settings and minimum delays for a t-junction of conventional layout and for the new layout a formula is developed for the delay to right turners and is used together with a standard delay formula for other approaches, in a general-purpose, function minimising subroutine to determine optimal signal settings and minimum delay. It was found that the rate of delay for the new layout is always smaller and the results are so favourable that full scale trials would be worthwhile. /TRRL/
