MODERN EVALUATION FOR ADVANCED VHF RECEIVERS: SENSITIVITY IS ONLY PART OF THE STORY
Several points are discussed concerning marine VHF receiver performance. The first is that the sensitivity rating of a given VHF marine receiver, taken by itself, is insufficient to adequately judge VHF receiver performance. The second is that most modern VHF receivers have reached--and in some cases, surpassed--the limit of useful sensitivity when connected to a real-world antenna system. Lastly, the actual performance of such a receiver is in practice more often limited by its large signal performance than by the small signal performance normally used as a method of comparison. To properly evaluate the performance of a VHF receiver, a wider range of evaluation criteria must therefore be used. Some of these criteria and their importance are explained in detail.
