COUNTRYSIDE RECREATION TRIP ORIGINS: USE OF THE REGISTRATION NUMBER TECHNIQUE
A technique - which has the advantages of speed and lack of inconvenience to the public - is put forward for determining the origins of day and half-day visitors by car to recreation sites, so obviating the need for interviewing. Use is made of the last two index letters of the registration plate which define the original registration authority. These 'uncorrected' origins must then be 'corrected' for sample bias, effected by reference to the probability of purchasing new and second-hand cars from dealers within that authority's area or near to the home of the purchaser. This procedure has been tested at one site where a comprehensive picture of visitors' home areas was obtained some time previously by interview and at another site where direct comparison can be made.
