TERMINAL CONTROL SYSTEMS FOR THE 90S

In order to maintain their competitive positions, marine terminals are becoming obliged to offer new services and increased efficiencies. These pressures are like the proverbial carrot and stick--the promise of higher efficiency being the carrot and the shipping lines being the stick. The response of terminal operators to these pressures is triple-faceted, involving electronic data interchange, equipment automation and real time tracking, and improved operations control. A Terminal Control System (TCS) is at the core of each of these areas. This paper examines the role of the TCS and projects the impact of rapidly changing computer hardware and software.
