A CORRELATION OF INDEX TESTS AND ROAD PERFORMANCE EXPERIENCE OF AN ANTIGUA MARL
The article describes the investigation carried out on eight samples of MARL, seven from Antigua and one from Barbuda and correlates the local rating based on experience with some index tests. The C.B.R. at optimum moisture contents plotted against plasticity index revealed that their correlation with local rating was only moderate. The C.B.R. testing was modified to account for the breakdown of MARL in water. The moulding water content was unaltered but the samples were surcharged, soaked for four days and C.B.R.'s determined after draining the samples for ten minutes. This method of testing showed a better relationship with local rating. The soaked C.B.R. as a percentage of conventional C.B.R. gives a measure of the reduction in C.B.R. on wetting the MARL. /TRRL/
