INTEGRATED MECHANIZATION OF MODULAR SHIPBUILDING

In recent decades, the development of world shipbuilding has been based on the principle of modularity, of assembling ships from sections and blocks. Ship construction nevertheless remains a very labor-intensive operation, a problem that this article addresses. By generalizing the shortcomings of traditional hull assembly practice, the author develops an improved process flow diagram for an integrated shipbuilding facility. It employs an outdoor transport system, a system of tilting jigs and turning platforms, and parts of several well-known engineering approaches.
