THE STRUCTURAL DRAWBACKS OF MARINE AUXILIARY BOILERS
The author argues that the proven designs of various marine boilers manufactured outside the USSR have been simplified for the sake of short-term savings without adequate preliminary scientific and technical analysis of the impact of the changes. He describes what the consequences of these technically unjustified simplifications have been in numerous installations aboard Soviet vessels. Cracks and ruptures began to form in the drums, bottoms, furnaces, tubes and other stressed parts of the boilers within a few years of installation--and in some cases, immediately.
