VIBRATORY IN SITU AND LABORATORY SOIL MODULI COMPARED
It was pointed out in the discussion of this paper that recent research has demonstrated that shear wave velocity of laboratory tested cohesive soil specimens increases with time under a constant confining pressure. The author observes that sample disturbance generally would result in a lowered modulus and, thus, if corrections for both the effect of time under confining pressure and sample disturbance were considered, the reported agreement between in situ and laboratory determined moduli for cohesive materials generally would be improved. Shear wave velocities can be obtained by cross-hole methods. However, bore holes are required for the method and this generally involved additional expense; also, care is required in interpretation of test data to be sure that the effects of stratification and other factors associated with signal generation and identification of arrival times are properly considered. The author comments on observations (made by discussers) made at the Bursa Plain site.
