STRUCTURAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR THE SURVIVABILITY OF ADVANCED MARINE VEHICLES IN ICE-INFESTED WATERS
The authors point out that structural considerations are most important to the survivability of advanced marine vehicles (AMVs) in ice-infested waters. The most common denominator for all types of AMVs is the possible structural damage due to collision with ice. Such damage may become severe as a result of the light scantling and high operating speed of AMVs. A quasi-static model is proposed for analyzing the approximate limit of the level of damage expected to a vessel's panels as a result of ice impacts. The data obtained may be used to predict the amount of damage for a particular impact, or as a design tool to constrain the operations of an AMV so that accidental damage will remain within acceptable limits.
