AN ATTEMPT TO MEASURE THE BLADE STRESS OF CONTROLLABLE PITCH PROPELLER OF AN ACTUAL SHIP

When the new training ship FUKAE MARU was built for Japan's Kobe Mercantile Marine University, apparatus was installed that would enable measuring the blade stress of her controllable pitch propeller (CPP). The apparatus and the measurement trials conducted over a range of blade angles and propeller revolutions are described. It was found that (1) the blade stress of a CPP can be measured reliably by the method used; (2) the blade stress varies in correspondence with the wake distribution, fluctuating cyclically with the propeller revolutions; (3) the mean stress changes in proportion to the mean propeller thrust; and (4) the fluctuating amplitude shows different behavior from that of the mean stress. The FUKAE MARU has an overall length of 50 meters and a displacement of 449 tons. Her CPP has a diameter of 2.1 meters and a 40 degree angle of skew.
