A WAKE MEASUREMENT USING FIBER OPTIC LASER DOPPLER VELOCIMETER IN A TOWING TANK
Investigations were made of Laser Doppler Velocimeter (LDV) measurement in a towing tank, especially with regard to the seeding technique and the traversing of an optical unit. The longitudinal velocity component of the flow at the propeller-disk plane of a pure car carrier was measured in a towing tank using a small fiber-optic LDV. From the front of the model ship bow, a water and aluminum powder mixture was injected as seeding into the flow field. The data rate was between 10 and 300 counts per second. A comparison with a 5-hole Pitot tube showed that the wake contour obtained using an LDV is similar to that obtained using a Pitot tube, but slightly wider.
