WATERWAY TRANSPORT CAPACITY

Transport capacity--i.e. cargo flow in tons per hour--is a main parameter in the evaluation of a transport system. As systems become more complex, the need increases for computer-aided assessment of this capacity. Numerous programs have been developed for this purpose, ranging from those of the macro type that cover an entire multimodal transport system to those of the micro type that deal in detail with only one component of a transport system. This paper suggests a classification method for these programs. It briefly describes two different types of programs dealing with the inland waterway transport mode, and presents related case studies.
