PEDESTRIANS: A GROUP WITH A HIGH ACCIDENT HAZARD
PIETONS: GROUPE A HAUT RISQUE D'ACCIDENT
This article deals with the safety problem of pedestrians, a problem whose importance has for a long time been underestimated by the responsible authorities in spite of a very high number of casualties (+11,000 per year). This text has three parts: analysis of a few accident statistical data, present state of the studies carried out in the field of the pedestrians' insecurity: some devoted to the personal characteristics of the pedestrians, others to the problems of the infrastructure and a measurement of the exposure to risk. The quantitative criteria are on one hand the total time passed on the street and on the other hand the number of streets crossed. This study tends to see if differential accident rates established can be explained by a different exposure to risk. Research in a first stage has been limited to a sample of children from 6 to 12 years of age living in a commune in the Brussels area.
