MODERN DREDGING AND DISPOSAL OF (CONTAMINATED) DREDGE SPOIL FROM MAINTENANCE WORKS IN FAIRWAYS TO AND HARBOURS IN THE PORT OF ROTTERDAM AND ITS SURROUNDINGS

This is a compilation of articles by various authors concerning modern disposal and storage methods used by the Port of Rotterdam to deal with contaminated dredging spoil. The first article provides an introduction and a summary of the contributions. "Policy Plan for the Disposal of Dredged Material from the Port of Rotterdam" follows. "Dumping Area North: the Disposal Area at the North Sea" goes on to describe use of the marine dumping and disposal area at the North Sea for non-contaminated seaborne dredging spoil. A group of six contributions then deals with "The Slufter," a large-scale disposal area and depot for contaminated seaborne and riverborne dredging spoil, separately dealing with design and environmental aspects, consolidation, development of a fresh water filter, dispersion of contaminants, monitoring and hydrological system management, and construction of the depot. The compilation concludes with a discussion of "The Parrot Beak," the disposal area and depot at the Maasvlakte for heavily contaminated dredging spoil.
