PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS OF MAINTENANCE DREDGING OPTIMIZATION TECHNIQUES IN ZEEBRUGGE
This article reprints the text of a paper selected as an outstanding presentation at the WODCON XII Conference held May 1-5, l989, in Orlando, Florida. It describes a research program undertaken by the Belgian Public Works Administration, in collaboration with its dredging contractors, to investigate the determination of the navigable depth in muddy areas and the optimization of the maintenance dredging process. Newly developed survey techniques are highlighted and the procedures developed to determine navigable depth are explained. The paper also deals with the application of the survey data aboard the dredges and reviews the research into the first results of techniques developed to monitor and improve dredge production. A numerical example accompanied by a cost-benefit analysis evaluates the economic benefits of the methods described. It is concluded that the practical application of maintenance dredging monitoring and optimization techniques provides a perfect link between the interests of authorities and contractors.
