EFFECTIVE ROLL REDUCTION AT LOW COST
The Roll-Nix system developed by SSPA (Swedish Maritime Research Center) is described. It is a microcomputer-based system for roll reduction by rudder control. The complete system is controlled by a computer unit with a built-in solid-state rate sensor for independent measurement of the roll motion. For a cost of about $100,000, Roll-Nix reduces roll by 50 to 70 percent. This compares with a cost of $1.2-$1.3 million for a fin stabilization system that reduces roll from 70 to 80 percent. Following several successful installations of Roll-Nix aboard Swedish Navy and Coast Guard vessels, SSPA has arranged with Tenfjord of Norway to sell the system for merchant vessels in 16 countries. The U.S. Navy is also expected to place orders for Roll-Nix.
