RELIABILITY--THE PRIME FACTOR FOR ACHIEVING GOOD ECONOMY

The economic ship results from a combination of society's requirements and available technology, both of which are subject to change. One of the main tasks of the marine diesel engine manufacturer, therefore, is, to forecast both of these factors over a certain period of time. This paper outlines the policy of Wartsila Diesel in relation to the problem. To be useful, a policy must result in a product range that suits market demand, and the way the company's present engines, including the VASA 46, respond to the demands for the economic ship is described. Automation and achievements in the field of knowledge engineering will also have an impact on the economic ship, so the concept of the "intelligent engine" that incorporates expert systems based on artificial intelligence is discussed as well.
