ECONOMIC SHIP--NOL APPROACH
In the years since the oil crises in 1973 and 1978, Neptune Orient Lines (NOL) has introduced various measures to improve the operational cost effectiveness of the company's existing vessels. Examples of such measures are discussed and include the extension of drydocking intervals, the use of higher viscosity fuel, the reduction in manning level, and planned maintenance. Because of the many variables inherent in ship operation, it has been difficult to measure the success of these steps in economic terms, but results are nonetheless encouraging. Based on the experience gained, NOL has incorporated some of these measures into new ship designs and the cost savings and results that are expected are discussed. The use of shipboard desktop computers is a central element, benefiting both shipowner and ship personnel.
