HYDROSTATIC RELEASE UNIT DEVELOPMENT
Developments in hydrostatic release units (HRUs), particularly those manufactured by Berwyn Marine Safety, in the UK, are reviewed. The HRU is a pressure-activated device capable of automatically releasing a liferaft from its lashings when a ship sinks. The liferaft's inflation gas bottle is activated by pulling on the painter, which is also attached to the HRU by a weak link.
