KALMAN FILTERS IN NAVIGATION SYSTEMS
A case is put forward for more precise navigation at sea. Existing and forthcoming navigational aids are first reviewed, after which the integration of marine navigation systems is discussed, particularly the use of Kalman filtering. The authors outline developments in air navigation and suggest why marine navigation has developed less rapidly. They discuss the concept of automatic collision avoidance and a method for tracking radar targets. Lastly, they survey marine applications of Kalman filtering techniques and assess further R&D needs.
