SHIP MANAGEMENT ASHORE AND AFLOAT--THE BP EXPERIENCE

In the 18 years between 1970 and 1988, there were three really significant causes of change in management style at the author's company, BP Shipping Limited. These causes were: the introduction of some modern management techniques, including Matrix Management, in the head office; the increasing use of electronics at sea and ashore; and the low oil prices and excess tonnage of the 1970s that caused the size of the BP-owned and time-chartered fleet to be reduced to the point where it could no longer fully service the transportation requirements of the BP Group. This paper examines the effects that these factors have had on ship management ashore and afloat.
