ONBOARD OPTICAL FIBER COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM FOR SHIOJI-MARU
This paper describes the optical fiber communication system that is installed on the training ship SHIOJI MARU of Tokyo University of Mercantile Marine. The system is a time-division multiplex, the ports of which are distributed over a single transmission carrier consisting of a fiber cable that is arranged in a closed loop. This is a system of exceptional flexibility, easy to install and designed to yield major savings on cables. It is of uniform design, lends itself to use with modular system terminals and incorporates a very advanced test facility. These factors greatly facilitate maintenance.
