SAFETY VALVE SEQUENCING ON POWER BOILERS

There are basically two spring-loaded safety valve systems used to protect marine boilers when an overpressure condition exists. For purposes of this article, they are called "the conventional safety valve system" and "the pilot valve system." The difference between the two systems lies in how they protect the superheater, which could absorb too much heat and be destroyed if a positive flow through the superheater is not allowed while the steam drum is being relieved. The methods used by the two systems to provide this protection differ in the sequence and purpose of valve operation. This article describes the operation of the two systems and these differences, cites relevant valve regulations of the U.S. Coast Guard, and discusses the valve testing required at inspections for vessel certification.
