NEW CONCEPTS IN CONSOLIDATION AND SETTLEMENT ANALYSIS
Comments are made on the author's modification of the Terzaghi theory in an attempt to model the later (low strain rate) stages as well as the early stages of conventional laboratory tests. The consolidation equation written in terms of voids ratio may be derived using fewer assumptions than are necessary for derivation of the equivalent Terzaghi equation in terms of pore pressure. Also, settlement (which is simply related to voids ratio) is more commonly measured and more reliably measurable than excess pore pressure. Field strata of engineering interest are commonly sufficiently thick to make changes in effective stress with depth due to gravity far from negligible when compared with changes in applied loading. This places a limitation on both the Terzaghi Theory and the Modified Theory. Comments are made on the authors consideration of the different state paths. The incorporation of strain rate effects and the gravity effects can be accomplished by adopting an iterative numerical method for satisfying all of the basic equations at all depths and at all times as the consolidation proceeds. It is suggested that the time is now come for the abandoment of all but the framework of the Terzaghi consolidation rate theory in favor of solutions built afresh on the basic relationships and solved with the aid of a small computer.
