REVIEW OF EXPANSIVE SOILS
The discussers of this paper describe a chart for potential expansiveness of soils based on Dumbleton's modified plasticity chart. It has been shown that in addition to soils above line A, soils falling below line A also have been classified as potentially expansive soils and their degree of expansiveness is determined using simple index tests in the laboratory. The usefulness of the chart has been verified by fitting expansive soils of different texture of Indian origin. Comments are made on the Russian method by Da Nilov and the Molnar method. It is noted that in a tropical country like India, temperature and relative humidity are important in estimating the heave of the expansive soils. A research program is currently in progress to correlate the laboratory tests data with the field behavior in terms of load conditions, soil structure, time etc. For the design of structures on expansive foundation soils, underreamed piles have been extensively used (in India), especially for light structures. They are comparatively cheaper and go a long way to minimize vertical heaving of the structures.
