RADIO COMMUNICATIONS OF LAST RESORT

As national coordinator for maritime and aeronautical search and rescue (SAR) in the maritime area, the U.S. Coast Guard depends upon EPIRBs and ELTs. (The latter stands for Emergency Locator Transmitters, which are battery-powered aircraft radio beacons that automatically activate in a crash to alert SAR authorities.) These distress beacons fill what would otherwise be a critical void in SAR communications by providing a means of transmitting an alert when two-way communications cannot be used. This article discusses their development and their intended place in distress alerting.
