STRESS ANALYSIS OF HOLLOW CYLINDRICAL INCLUSIONS
In this closure to the discussion, the authors answer questions that have been asked relating to the basis of the theoretical development. The latter is based on equations of elasticity and therefore is applicable to those situations in which the materials behave as linearly elastic. The theoretical analysis is more vigorous than that given by Burns and Richard. Only in the case of flexible liners do the two approaches give identical results. As the rigidity of the inclusion is increased, the author's results deviate significantly. Stress concentration caused by the inclusion effect of the liner will disappear at some distance from the liner. This distance in general depends on the properties of the interacting materials and the flexibility ratio. For commonly used material constants, it has been shown that this distance ranges form 1 diam to 1-1/2 diam from the edge of the liners. Comments are made on graphs which represent the state of stresses or deformations. The observation is made that the theoretical development is general enough to accommodate the slip condition at the interface.
