INNOVATIONS IN HYDROGRAPHIC SURVEYS AND DREDGE CONTROL SYSTEMS

With the enactment of the Water Resources Development Act of 1986, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is faced with 100 million cubic yards of new dredging work each year in addition to its historical workload of 260 million cubic yards of maintenance dredging. This situation has increased the importance of innovative and state-of- the-art hydrographic survey systems, horizontal positioning, and dredging control systems. For this reason, the Corps has put several innovative survey vessels into service. A short description of these vessels and their hydrographic survey systems is presented.
