THE INLAND WATER TRANSPORTATION IN CHINA

China has more than 5,600 navigable rivers, and these form a number of large river systems. An overview of inland water transportation in the country is presented. It begins by discussing China's waterways, river ports, transport modes and transport vessels, and marine industry. It is acknowledged that a gap exists between the technological advancement of river vessels in China and in the developed countries. The prospective development of inland waterway transportation is envisaged as encompassing the construction of deep waterways for 1,000 ton class ships, the construction of river ports, the replacement of wooden vessels and other old tonnage and limitation of concrete boat construction, the development of new types of river vessels, the modernization of the marine industry, and the establishment of a telecommunication network for each river system. The policy issues that must be dealt with are reviewed, including the comprehensive utilization of water resources, the locating of factories at river sides to generate cargo, the need to integrate railway transportation with water transportation, and the need for support in such forms as funding, adequate fuel oil supply and tax relief.
