VLCC CONSTRUCTION--RISING PRICES FAIL TO DETER NEW ORDERS
The very large crude carrier (VLCC) is gradually returning to favor as tanker markets improve and owners take steps--or plan to take steps--to replace existing ageing tonnage. Between 1987 and 1989, however, prices for building such a vessel in the Far East have risen from about $45 million to perhaps as much as $75 million. The reasons behind this steep escalation in price are discussed, as are the orders that are being placed with Far East yards despite it.
