DAMAGE ASSESSMENT OF STRUCK SHIPS IN COLLISION

One hundred eighteen ship collision accidents were surveyed in marine court records in Japan for the purpose of assessing the degree of damage sustained by the struck ships. Damage was graded on a scale of 1 to 5, based on the words used to describe the damage. Predictive damage grades as criterion variables were obtained for five classes of struck ships that were classified by their gross tonnage. Factors covered in this discussion of the survey include: the influence of the ratio of the mass of the striking ship to that of the struck ship; the influence of striking speed; and the usefulness of the fuzzy reasoning approach for linguistic evaluations pertaining to structural damage under special collision conditions.
