DYMOS (DYNAMIC MONITORING SYSTEM) MONITORING AND REAL TIME FAULT DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM OF SHIP'S PROPELLING PLANT
DYMOS, an acronym for Dynamic Monitoring System, has been added by IHI (Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd.) as an integral part of the "IHI Ship Administration System." DYMOS is a sophisticated monitoring system that informs crew members of any abnormality in the operating conditions of the ship's propulsion plant, specifying both the location and the cause of the abnormality. This differentiates it from existing monitoring systems, which report only the type of abnormality--for example, a drop in pressure or a rise in temperature. DYMOS is an online system and utilizes artificial intelligence. It can safely be used to enhance the reliability of propulsion plant operation aboard ships with reduced crews or low-cost crews from developing countries. This article presents an overview of the system and concludes with a brief summary of operating experience with the first installation, aboard the VLCC COSMO VENUS.
