THE WELL DRESSED SHIP
Electronics has become the byword for modern shipping, much of it focusing on communications. But there are other areas where electronics is now pivotal to safe navigation at sea. The author evaluates what is now widely regarded as the minimum standard fit of equipment for any ship moving into the age of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). His review ranges over such areas as position determination systems, rasterscan radar, magnetic compasses, gyrocompasses, speed logs, echo sounders, satellite navigators, and chronometers.
