THE ROLE OF THE MODERN BUNKER BROKER
The modern bunker broker plays a vital role in shipping. This paper outlines how this came about and describes the ways in which bunker brokers operate. It then details the advantages that a broker can offer to the operators of both large and small fleets and to the oil suppliers, as well. For the ship operators, these advantages include: the services of an experienced bunker purchasing department; quantity purchasing discounts; worldwide contacts; negotiating skills; knowledge of bunker oil technology; and short and long range planning. For the suppliers, they include: a convenient marketing channel; savings in overhead and sales staff costs; buyer credit status information; and market intelligence.
