THE BELGIANS' OPINION IN MATTERS OF ROAD SAFETY

LES BELGES FACE A LA SECURITE ROUTIERE

This study, consisting of three parts, presents the results of a public opinion survey concerning the knowledge of legislation on alcohol and driving, opinions on the sanctions and on the danger associated with alcohol on the road. During 1971-1972 five searches were conducted. The data was gathered by questionnaires mailed to 1200 people at age 18 or over in Belgium. While the first part emphasizes the methodological aspect, the second and third part present the synthesis of the results. They cover 5 subjects as follows; speed limit, distribution of usage of different transportation and reasons for their choice, knowledge of the legislation on alcohol and driving, automobile control techniques and road safety compaigns on radio and TV. Only three opinion groups have been positively orientated toward speed limit. 80% of the interviewed drivers and non-drivers submitted the proposal because of the accident reduction effect. 58% considered a better maneuverability in difficult driving situations. The majority of the negative opinions leveled at the unreality of this measure. With regard to drunkeness and driving, 9 from 10 persons considered this fact as serious violation of the law. 67 from 100 persons recommended to road safety campaign on TV, 40 persons on radio. To get to work, 40% of the Belgium population uses automobiles, 12% ride bicycles, 19% walk.
