THE CHANGING ROLE OF COMMAND
In his examination of the changing role of command, the author observes that: (1) the authority of command is being taken over ashore, while the responsibility remains firmly with the master; (2) the same performance is expected from the ship, although operating crews have been greatly reduced; (3) more sophisticated equipment is available, but it is only fitted to the minimum required standards and located without thought for the user; and (4) the master needs shore support in the running of his vessel.
