EXPLOSIONPROOF EQUIPMENT
This article is third in a series on electrical installations in hazardous locations. It explains the concept of the explosionproof enclosure, which assumes that flammable gases and vapors may enter the enclosure and that a source of ignition would create an internal explosion. The enclosure is therefore designed to withstand the explosion and prevent its propagation to the hazardous area surrounding the enclosure. Following a summary of general design principles, the designs of specific types of explosionproof enclosures and fittings are described and guidelines for the maintenance of explosionproof equipment are given.
