PRODUCING CONCRETE WITH SPECIFIED QUALITY
This article describes what is entailed in producing ready mixed concrete with a specified quality and durability. Quality concrete is defined as that which contains suitable raw materials of sufficient workability to produce the desired strength and durability as given in ASTM Specifications. The materials specifications include the size of the coarse aggregates, slump, air content, and concrete mix proportions. The steps involved in manufacturing quality concrete, once the raw materials are obtained, are outlined next. The proportions of each additive aggregates, cement, water - must be measured exactly. After transporting, on site quality control tests are performed for strength, slump, and air content. In conclusion, the specifics to follow in order to obtain a quality concrete are summarized: 1) quality raw materials; 2) setting of ranges for aggregate size, slump, and air entrainment; 3) determination of proportions; 4) accurate measuring and batching procedures; 5) correct mixing and transporting to project; 6) accurate discharging of material with no water added in-situ; and 7) supplying purchaser with mix information.
