TECHNOLOGY GAP DEVELOPING IN DEEPWATER SUPPORT VESSELS
The evolution of offshore service vessels in parallel with offshore platforms and drilling rigs was interrupted in the 1980s. The offshore industry's drilling and production capabilities now consequently exceed the capabilities of available support vessels. For example, as of 1988, no U.S.-built vessel available for work in the deeper waters of the Gulf of Mexico meets all criteria for the optimal support of existing drilling and production hardware. The author points out technological improvements that are needed, including the capabilities for handling much heavier anchors and improved stationkeeping abilities.
