REGULAR ANALYSIS COULD EXTEND CLASS
Machinery health monitoring is now being offered by Lloyd's Register through its new Lubricant Quality Scan Service. One impetus to offering the service was a change in small diesel engine classification requirements. Small engines have had to be dismantled for a surveyor's inspection, but a 1988 amendment now allows approval without dismantling if a number of factors, including a lube oil analysis, are satisfactory. Similarly, if a lube analysis shows a stern tube bearing to still be satisfactory, a surveyor may use this to waive having the tube drawn when considering an extension of survey.
