THE EFFECT OF STRAIN HARDENING OF MATERIALS ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF LOCAL PLASTIC DEFORMATIONS
The durability of a material is strongly dependent upon the influence that the strain hardening factor has upon local plastic deformations. Structures made of materials with low hardening may experience failure under low average strains owing to highly localized plastic deformations in concentration zones. Increasing plasticity characteristics will not completely compensate for the negative effect of low hardening. An analysis of the effect of strain hardening on local plastic deformation is presented and it is recommended that the strain hardening factor be added to the number of standardized characteristics for material properties.
