CREATING PERMANENT BUOYANCY--THE POLYSTYRENE SOLUTION
Among the suggestions for increasing the buoyancy of passenger ro/ro vessels to increase their stability, or to at least give passengers more time to abandon ship in an emergency, is that of putting a "life-belt" around the ship. The provision of buoyant sidewalls could take such forms as filling the tweendecks around the waterline with empty oil drums or filling wing spaces with polystyrene blocks.
