IMPROVING JOINTS ATTACHING LIGHT-ALLOY SUPERSTRUCTURES TO STEEL HULLS
The feasibility of extending time between repairs and reducing repair needs for icebreakers and icebreaking cargo ships is largely dependent upon how long their stern tubes function normally. Many of the Siberian rivers and arctic sea basins of the USSR have extensive areas of shallow water with muddy-sandy bottoms. The performance of the stern tubes of icebreaking vessels in the USSR fleet during service under these conditions is evaluated. Needed improvements, including those in stern tube seals, are recommended.
